The Secret Lives of Colour: François Houle

Chromascope: Illuminated Reportage of TSLOC (2026)

Chromascope is an immersive creative documentary project I designed specifically for the 2026 Guelph Jazz Festival and Colloquium (September 10–13, 2026). Serving as a dedicated, fine-art counterpoint to standard festival coverage, this body of work utilizes my signature methodology of Illuminated Reportage to explore the intersection of avant-garde music, deep listening, and physical photography.

The project embeds within the festival's ecosystem to capture the living narrative of François Houle’s headline performance. I will focus on the quiet, crucial details that define the music's texture—from the physical artifacts of an annotated score to the intuitive dynamics of the stage and the subtle backstage chemistry of the ensemble. By deliberately processing the imagery to emphasize the specific color palettes of the compositions—such as obsidian, gamboge, and scarlet—Chromascope will translate sonic wavelengths into striking visual narratives, transforming a fleeting live experience into a permanent, luminous cultural legacy.

Chromascope represents the latest chapter in our deep, multi-year collaborative relationship. Learn more about the historical trajectory of the TSLOC below!

TSLOC Project History

The Secret Lives of Color (TSLOC): I was commissioned by the Pierre Boulez Saal in Germany to create short film about composer & clarinetist François Houle’s compositional process leading up to the world debut on September 19, 2021 in Berlin. The TSLOC concept has continued to evolve as has the way Houle and I work together. He has continued to develop and workshop components of the material with various artists for which I have taken part observing and recording the process through my creative perspective. I have continued developing a visual body of work with him in Whitehorse, New York City, and the Netherlands. The Canadian debuted with a full ensemble performed at Modulus Festival in November 2022 in Vancouver. It has since evolved to include performances at the Novara Jazz Festival, Italy (2023), Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville (2023), Basel, Switzerland (2024) and its most recent 2025 tour across eastern Canada appearing at the National Arts Centre for Ottawa’s Jazz Festival, Suoni Per Il Popolo in Montreal, and Something Else Festival in Hamilton (2025).
